Only bearing material with very fine crystalline structure and intermediate layer abatement can significant progress be made in the fatigue strength of the layer material and in the tribological properties of the bearing. Examples are the new A1Zn4.5Mg alloy, a high-temperature bearing material, and the A1Sn20 coating, which is cathode-coated. Bearing these types of materials for the internal combustion engine design opened up new dimensions. This article describes the test results of three diesel engines. An application diagram can be created for the most important bearing types, which can be used to select the best bearing for each type of engine.
