《东方杂志》作为旧中国最重要的大型综合杂志之一,创刊之初即意在推动中国的西学传播,不过传播的乃是立宪政治主张的西学。1911年辛亥革命爆发后,《东方杂志》的西学观显示出了其陈旧的一面,张元济将杂志交给了年轻的杜亚泉,由此杜亚泉开始塑造过渡时期的《东方杂志》西学传播方针,为1918年与《新青年》的中西大论战奠定了思想基础。
Oriental Magazine, one of the most important large-scale comprehensive magazines in old China, was intended to promote the spread of Western learning in China at the beginning of its publication. However, Western media spread constitutional political ideas. After the 1911 Revolution broke out, Oriental Outlook on Western Studies showed its obsolete side. Zhang Yuanji handed the magazine to young Du Yaquan. Thus Du Yaquan started to shape the “Oriental Magazine” western propagation policy during the transitional period, Years and the “New Youth” laid the ideological foundation for the great debate between China and the West.
