This article reviews the apathy and complacency that mainstream economists have demonstrated from time to time in the face of socio-economic problems since the birth of modern economics. The authors point out that this phenomenon stems from the nature of economists’ hopes of winning applause and fearing controversy. To avoid controversy, most economists have chosen to avoid it.
