In the United States and abroad, the incidence of primary lung cancer is rising rapidly. It is estimated that there will be 144,000 new cases in the United States in 1985, including 98,000 males and 46,000 females. Lung cancer is now the first cause of cancer death in the United States. Women’s lung cancer now accounts for the second place in cancer deaths, and will soon surpass breast cancer and become the first. In 1980, about 104,000 people died of lung cancer in the country, of whom 28,000 (27%) were women. The incidence of lung cancer in the 1920s was still low, similar to men and women. The incidence of lung cancer among men increased sharply from the 1930s to the 1970s, but women had a marked increase since the 1960s. In view of the prevalence of lung cancer, the authors analyzed data on 1752 lung cancers at the Lahey Clinical Center.
