The co-operation between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party in 1937 was originally a kind of acceleration under the special circumstances. However, the long-standing estrangement between the two parties has in fact still many unsolved problems. In particular, the Kuomintang will have to maintain its one-party dictatorship and the Communist Party is determined not to be bound by it to ensure its own independent development. This contradiction is thus more difficult to resolve. Therefore, the cooperation between Kuomintang and the Communist Party has just begun, a series of differences will soon appear. In order to solve this problem, Chiang Kai-shek proposed in the early days of the Anti-Japanese War the idea of merging the KMT and the KMT into one major party. Around this proposition, the KMT and the CPC conducted many negotiations, but at the end of the day, there were major differences in the understanding of the post-merger organizational form and they failed to talk together. As a result, the KMT and the CPC continued to maintain the method of party-to-party cooperation until the war of resistance against Japan ended.
