A new set of criteria has been developed for blasting failure (also known as blasting hazard judgment criteria), with emphasis on deep-hole caving mining operations, the degree of damage judged by comprehensively applying the effects of vibration level, rock properties, site characteristics and surface support system . The main objective is to provide a fairly accurate database to optimize the development of expert systems models for blasting design, data analysis and surface control. The introduced new damage criterion can be used to measure the extent of damage to the rock structure using a dimensionless weave parameter called the Blast Damage Index (BDI). Accordingly, a unified model can be used to describe the failure of a burst bow, which helps to formulate digital simulation code to generally describe the extent of blast damage. To verify this index, a number of field studies were conducted on several stope production and undercutting at a large underground basement mine. The findings show that there is good agreement between observed damage and the predicted damage status based on BDI values. In addition, some practical measures are put forward to minimize the blasting damage of deep-hole caving mining operations in large-scale underground mines.
