The Journal of Asian Medical Journal, Vol. 23, No. 7 (1980), p. 529 reports: The Ministry of Health and Welfare of Japan issued an interim report on the vital statistics of 1979. According to the report, Japan is rapidly moving towards an old society based on the decline in birth rate, population growth rate, mortality rate and the percentage of men and women of child-bearing age in the population. In 1979, the number of live births was 1,642,582, and the number of deaths was 689,659. In this way, the natural population increase was 952,923. The number of live births was 66,061 less than in 1978, and the number of deaths was 6,162 fewer than in 1978. The live birth rate per 1,000 people was 14.2 (14.9 in 1978) and the mortality rate was 6.0 (6.1 in 1978), indicating a decrease in both birth and death. The number of deaths was divided into the following categories: 12,923 infant deaths (7.9 per 1,000) and neonatal deaths 8,590 (5.2 per 1,000 persons, 1,038 or 0.4% less than in the previous year). The number of stillbirths was 82,310, which was 5,144 less than the previous year. Stillbirth can be further divided into: natural stillbirth 50,879 (4,939 less than in 1978); artificial stillbirth 31,440 (less than 1978 in 205),
