Atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) is a 28-amino acid hormone secreted by the atrium. ANP isolated from lung tissue has vasodilator and natriuretic properties. The role of airway function has recently been studied. Intravenous ANP in asthmatic patients produces a significant bronchodilator response. Greater intravenous concentration can reduce the resistance of normal airway. Injecting ANP alters the responsiveness of the bronchia to inhaled histamine and inhaled distilled water by sonication, which reduces histamine-induced bronchoconstriction when inhaled ANP. In vitro animal experiments confirmed that ANP-induced relaxation of smooth muscle produced cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) by acting on a specific guanylate cyclase.
