茄子又名落苏。据说吴越王钱缪的儿子是瘸子,当时江浙一带人们恐犯忌讳,改称落苏。它原产亚洲热带地区,在我国的栽培史也很早,北魏(公元六世纪)贾思勰的《齐民要术》上已有种茄子法。相传隋炀帝爱吃茄子,见其色彩奇异认为是仙品,故赐名为“昆仑紫瓜。”南朝诗人沈约有句道:“紫茄纷烂漫”。宋代也有位诗人描绘茄子的形象说:“青紫皮肤类宰官,光圆头脑作僧看。”
