I. Developing Cross-Strait Economic Relations Since the late 1970s, remarkable economic and “breakthrough” changes have taken place in the economic relations between the mainland and Taiwan. The situation of complete isolation and non-reciprocity between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait has been broken, and the scale of exchanges and cooperation has been constantly expanding. The trend is irreversible. According to relevant statistics, the indirect trade between the two sides of the strait through Hong Kong was only 70 million U.S. dollars in 1979, rising to 3.483 billion U.S. dollars in 1989 and nearly 50 times in 10 years. In 1990, it increased by 16.08 percent over 1989, reaching 4.043 billion U.S. dollars. The annual growth momentum is even more fierce. In the first quarter, it increased by 37.6% over the same period of the previous year and is expected to exceed 5 billion U.S. dollars in the whole year.
