In the fourth quarter of 1986, the CDC’s Office of Smoking and Health organized a nationwide survey on adult smoking to study the perceptions, attitudes and smoking patterns among American adults about tobacco use. A total of 13,031 adults aged 17 and over were sampled by probability sampling to investigate by phone. In contrast to other national smoking status surveys conducted over the past 40 years, the results of this survey show that the prevalence of smoking in today’s U.S. adults is the lowest ever recorded (Table 1) and 29.5% for men (95% confidence limit 28.4-30.6), 23.8% for women (95% confidence interval 22.7-24.9), and 26.5% for men and women (95% confidence interval 25.8-27.3). It is estimated that 24.6% of adults smoke (but are not smoking now), 30.4% of them men and 19.3% of women. Black smoker rates were 28.4% (95% confidence interval 25.0-31.8) and whites 26.4% (95% confidence interval 25.5-27.2).
