At the close of World War II, Fermi went to work at the University of Chicago, in the Department of Physics and the newly established Institute for Nuclear Research (which is now named after him). At that time, academic research and postgraduate teaching at the university were being recuperated, and the students who had been delayed by the war returned swiftly to school. University of Chicago physics graduate enrollment is particularly high. How many of them are attracted to Fermi’s name and come to Chicago, we probably will never know. Personally, I am one of these people. When I came to China from China in November 1945, I was already determined to follow Fermi or Wigner. But I know that the war effort has caused them to reduce their college staff. I remember one day when I arrived in New York
