北宋文学家赵鼎臣文采风流,诗名卓著,众所推称。其诗作善于使事用典,且能抓住物象的特征予以精妙的比喻,因而显得鲜活生动,意象浑然。赵鼎臣不仅工诗,在书画上也造诣精深,创作时事诗如画,使诗歌富有画作的韵致。赵鼎臣为诗深受苏轼及黄庭坚的影响,加之其常与时贤俊彦诗酒文会,故而能转益多师,博采众长,其诗显现出格律严整,清新自然,工巧流丽的风貌。其所著《竹隐畸士集》中之诗歌具有丰富的思想内容和高超的艺术技巧,在北宋后期的诗坛上风姿绰约,独树一帜。
