As readers and advertisers have flocked to the Internet, many newspaper companies began to sell the building in exchange for funding or cost savings. However, the demand is now declining as frozen credit markets make commercial real estate transactions even harder. In 2008, at least six newspaper companies said they planned to sell their buildings and individual companies plan to sell them to rent some of their space for the operation of their newspapers. As the number of employees shrinks, the days when newspapers run their offices in downtown buildings tend to come to an end, and some companies intend to shift to smaller offices to save money.
