Edith Wharton is one of the most famous American women writers in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries in the United States. His novels Ethan Frome is of profound tragic significance. This thesis uses the principle of binary opposition in structuralism to analyze the causes of Eitan’s tragedy from the dissertation’s theme, the confrontation between characters and their characters.
