With reference to 18th century English poetry, it is often associated with sentimentalism, but also with the natural beauty of ruins, monuments, graves, and night spots. However, this is only the appearance of poetry. Some poems seem to reveal some kind of feelings when they are read, but some traces of negative existence can still be found in the lines so that readers will feel sentimental. This paper argues that the reason why the mainstream of poetry in this period is sentimental is that these poems all imply some kind of sentimental trait that can touch the reader’s soul, that is, the existence after being thrown into a particular situation Morphology, and the resulting loneliness, compassion and anxiety of emptiness.
