杂志封面是艺术总监、编辑、出版商都要认真对待的课题。因为杂志需要靠它的“脸面”去从报摊中脱颖而出,这也是销售额升降的秘密之一。当然,内容是关键,但是如果封面没有吸引住读者的话,人们将永远不知道你葫芦里卖的是什么药——他们压根没有翻! 杂志封面是如此重要,无论它是流行的,有着丰厚利润的时装杂志,还是仅在小范围订阅的家庭杂志,封面必须在如下繁杂的环境中仍然吸引读者:在杂志摊,在当天的信件堆中,或是分散的街角。封面的另一个功能是“换换口味”。当读者收到每一期新杂志时,他们总是期待新的兴趣点和冲击力。杂志封面能让读者掏钱时,肯定是由于有什么不同于上期封面的东西吸引了他们,而下期也不应该和这期相同。
