The Tang Dynasty, especially in the middle and late Tang period, was an important turning point in the history of Mencius. With the prominent Mencius status, three specialized notes “Meng” appeared in the mid and late Tang Dynasty, namely, Lu Shan Jing’s Mencius Note, Zhang Jian’s Mencius Sound Meanings and Ding Gong’s Mencius Tune. The original books of these three Mencius books have been lost, leaving only part of Sun Tzu’s Mencius Sounds in the Northern Song Dynasty. From the perspective of Mencius history, this essay analyzes the essays of the three Mencius annotations in the Tang Dynasty, and summarizes the profiles and features of the Mencius essay in the Tang Dynasty. The appearance of three notes reflects the gradual prosperity of the Mengxue in the middle and late Tang Dynasty, which provides an important foundation for the development of the Mengxue in the Song Dynasty and beyond.
