One of the possible mechanisms of sudden enlargement of carotid plaque is bleeding at the injury site. Texon believes plaque hemorrhage is caused by hydraulic pressure in the bloodstream, which “pulls the plaque toward the center of the vasculature,” resulting in submerged intima.
