In the past, palladium was mainly used in the manufacture of electrical contactors, dental alloys, chemical catalysts and the like, and its use was limited. In recent years, palladium and platinum have been used in catalytic converters for automotive exhaust gas, giving palladium a chance of contaminating air, water and soil. It has been reported that human lung fibroblasts and rabbit lung macrophages are sensitive to the action of soluble platinum and their toxicity is markedly reduced by the production of total ATP. To this end, the authors investigated the effect of palladium on Aldolase, one of the major metabolic enzymes. This enzyme is a key enzyme in glycolysis and catalyzes the breakdown of fructose-1,6-diphosphate into dihydroxyacetone phosphate and glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate.
