Language and culture are inseparable, and color codes are largely conditioned by cultural factors. In intercultural communication, due to the differences of natural environments, cognitive conditions and aesthetic styles among ethnic groups, color words have their own advantages and disadvantages in both emotional and symbolic semantics. Based on the division of the basic color words of Berlin and Key, this article attempts to explain the similarities and differences between the English and Chinese color words in dividing criteria, sentiment semantics and national characteristics, and to explore the social meaning of color codes, It points out that the similarities and differences of this kind of external language expression are only relative concepts. Different social and cultural contexts give different social meanings of color codes, which reflect the characteristics of certain national cultures.
