老普里尼与《自然史》谈论西方百科全书史,不能不提到古罗马的老普里尼及其百科巨著《自然史》(又译《博物志》)。老普里尼(Pliny the Elder)生于公元23年,23岁投军,还指挥过舰队,学过法律,当过官(在西班牙代理过总督),但一生主要以著述为务,曾留下7部著作,其中最重要的就是《自然史》。全书37卷,分为2500章节,引据500多位古代学者的著作。书成于公元77年,老普里尼将它题献给罗马皇帝提图斯(公元39~81)。题献不过是表示一种意思,但全书160卷羊皮纸书卷手稿并未献出去,而是传给了他的养子小普里尼(Pliny the Younger,公元61~113)。后者也是一位学者,以传世的书
Old prini and “natural history” to talk about the history of the western encyclopedia, can not but refer to the ancient Roman priestini and his encyclopedia “natural history” (also translated “natural history”). Pliny the Elder was born in 23 AD, joined the army at the age of 23, also led the fleet, studied law, worked as a government official (acting governor in Spain), but his life was largely written and remained Seven books, the most important of which is “natural history.” Whole book 37 volumes, divided into 2500 chapters, citing more than 500 books by ancient scholars. The book was made in 77 AD, and Pliny the old man dedicated it to the Roman Emperor Titus (AD 39-81). The title was merely a meaning, but the 160-parchment manuscript of the book was not given, but to his adoptive son Pliny the Younger (AD 61- 113). The latter is also a scholar to handed down the book
