It is generally accepted that plasma antifreeze proteins have a direct effect on the viability of many sea breams in icy seawater, however, there is no direct empirical evidence that this is correct. In this study, the American quail showed a similar seasonal change in resistance to freezing and plasma antifreeze protein. When injected into the body of Rainbow trout (which itself does not contain antifreeze protein), the bluntrouched antifreeze protein can increase the resistance of rainbow trout to freezing and is directly related to its antifreeze protein content in plasma. These studies demonstrate that antifreeze protein is directly related to the viability of many teleost fish in frozen seawater below their freezing point in the blood and does not require specialized antifreeze protein receptors in the fish to accomplish this function.
