赤坎镇是开平市的重点侨乡,著名爱国侨领司徒美堂先生的故乡,在战争年代有着光荣的革命斗争历史。镇关工委充分利用本地的优势,发挥六大教育基地的作用,取得了好成绩。这六大教育基地是:两间图书馆——用科学知识武装下一代这两间图书馆均坐落在潭江之滨。一座是司徒氏图书馆,一座是关族图书馆,都是市华侨文物保护单位,不但是赤坎地区的重要文化场所,也是培养青少年成长的教育基地。司徒氏图书馆始办于1926年,历经70多年的沧桑,几经停复。1982年在侨胞的鼎力支持下,经过装修重新开放。全国政协副主席叶选平来开平视察时,为该馆
Chikan Town is the hometown of the principal overseas Chinese in Kaiping City, the famous patriotic overseas Chinese leader, and has a glorious history of revolutionary struggle during the war years. These six education bases are: Two Libraries - Arming the Next Generation with Scientific Knowledge Both libraries are located on the banks of the Tanjiang River. One is the Stuart Library and the other is the Guanzai Library, both of which are overseas Chinese cultural relics protection units.
