The World Health Organization (WHO) pointed out in 1980 that there were 260 million elderly people in the world, of which half live in developed countries. However, by the year 2000, it is projected that the elderly population will reach 400 million, of which three fifths will live in developing countries. The proportion of older people in the population structure will also increase year by year. In 1982, China accounted for nearly 50 million elderly over the age of 65, accounting for 4.9% of the total population. It is predicted that by the year 2000, the elderly will account for 6.9% of the total population, reaching 83 million to 88 million. The above situation shows that the elderly and their eye diseases are likely to increase year by year. The problem of blindness and low vision will also become increasingly serious and deserve our attention.
