Nida’s “functional equivalence” theory has long been disputed by Western and Eastern scholars. It requires the target language readers to understand and appreciate the translation should be the same as the original text readers understanding and appreciation of the original is actually an ideal state because it ignores the differences between different languages. This article discusses the gain and loss of the theory in the field of translation and calls for a dialectical view of the theory.
