Filtration to remove leukocytes from RBCs and platelets concentrates (PCs) significantly reduces HLA alloimmunization and ineffectiveness of infused PCs. Since leukocytes are primarily imported via RBCs, leukocytes that filter out RBCs have been approved; there are fewer leukocytes in the PCs and the extent of removal is not conclusive. The authors prospectively investigated the differences in the prevention of HLA alloimmunization and ineffectiveness by removing leukocytes from PCs by filtration and centrifugation to determine if the filtration of leukocytes in the PCs is necessary.
