At present, not less than five companies are bidding for the contract development of the Spanish Army’s new main battle tank. According to reliable sources, General Dynamics’ Terrestrial Systems Division is proposing to partner with Spain to produce the M1 (105mm Rifle) tank or the newer MIEI (120mm Smoothbore) tank. However, both tanks exceed the 50-tonne weight prescribed by the Spanish Army. France’s Ground Weapons Industry Group (GIAT) is providing Spain with a package of proposals that include improvements to the existing AMX-30 tank to the AMX-30B2 standard, production of the AMX-40 (120-mm smoothbore tank) in Spain, The French Army’s new EPC main battle tank, put into operation in the 1990s, was incorporated into the Spanish Army’s equipment program. The Italian company Exotimera intends to provide Spain with an improved OF-45 OF-40 tank, which will be equipped with a larger horsepower engine and a 120-mm smoothbore gun.
