11940年6月,在八路军重庆办事处的帮助下,萧军携妻小与老友舒群一起,第二次来到延安。在此之前的1938年3月,萧军曾只身一人,徒步由山西赶到延安。此行延安只是路过,他原计划到五台山去打游击,但战事相阻,路途不通,未能如愿。毛泽东从丁玲那里知道消息后,很想会会这位鲁迅弟子,特派办公室秘书和培元前往问候。和培元提出安排时间让他见见毛主席,萧军竟然客气地回绝了:“不见了,他挺忙的,我也只住上一两个星期就走!”
