1843年,上海正式被辟为商埠后,允许外国人派驻领事,居住贸易,从而西方各国各式各样人物纷纷来沪;在洋泾浜(今延安东路)北南两边及虹口地带,英租界、法租界、美租界先后设立。蜂拥而至的西人,为了“交通知识,讨论营业,兜揽买卖,停驻旅客”,并且为了在余暇之时能寻些消遣,于是在1864年,上海总会(ShanghaiClub)率先在外滩设立。
In 1843, Shanghai was formally opened as a commercial port, allowing foreigners stationed in the consular residence in trade, so that all kinds of people in various Western countries have come to Shanghai; in Pidgeon (now Yan’an East Road) on both sides of North and Hongkou, the British Concession, French Concession, the United States set up the concession. The swarming Westerners set up the Shanghai Club in 1864 to take the lead in setting up the Bund in order to “transport knowledge, discuss business, conduct business, park passengers” and seek recreation amid leisure time.
