本文考辨《毛诗》中的五个联绵字:(一)“虺”之言委顿也,犹言委靡不举,并非“病”名,而是“病”貌。毛传所云“病也”之“病”,乃疲弊之义。(二)“蔽芾”之言()孛也,草木茂盛之貌,毛传云“小貌”,失之,朱熹集传云“盛貌”,得之。(三)“委委佗佗”,是联绵字“委佗”的叠音形式,雍容自得之貌,毛传分为“委委”与“佗佗”而释之,失之,朱熹集传云“雍容自得之貌”,得之。(四)“夭绍”之言窈窕也,身材高挑,体态优美之貌,朱熹云“纠紧之貌”,失之,马瑞辰以为“夭绍”与“窈纠、忧受”同为形容美好之词,得之。(五)“穆穆”之言也,犹言“”,形容勤勉不已,毛传云“美也”,不确,朱熹集传云“深远之意”,失之。
