Recent observations from the University of Chicago show that patients with colorectal cancer undergoing surgery for colorectal cancer account for two-thirds of those over the age of 60 and those over the age of 70 account for one-fourth. The prevalence of colorectal cancer in the United States is estimated to be approximately 150,000 patients in 1988. Fortunately, the age factor itself is not a determinant of the survival rate. The older prognosis is not necessarily pessimistic. For patients aged 70, 80, and 90 years, the 5-year and 10-year survival rates after surgery are almost the same. This article will review various diagnostic and surgical methods currently used for rectal cancer, as well as the expected results.
