大卫·亨利·黄(David Henry Hwang)(黄哲伦)是当代最为著名的美国华裔戏剧家之一。《中式英语》作为其代表作,在百老汇上映后便引发了强烈的反响。该剧本发生地点设置在中国大陆的一个偏远城镇。剧中,中外合作者致力于合作交流,却在互相学习,相互模仿的过程中引发了种种笑料,尤以“中式英语”的使用最发人深思。鉴于该部作品人文性、创新性、融合性的显著特征,本文聚焦于在文化空间的大背景之下,刍议该作品在与城市空间理论的三大对应点(1)社会背景[地理方位、历史文化];(2)权力关系;(3)民族身份这三方面上所体现的作者独特的文化建构,厘清由空“学”引发的“中式英语”现象背后所渗透的东西方的文化差异与文化融合,也为二者未来的发展提供一个合理的可能性的预测。
David Henry Hwang (HH) is one of the most famous contemporary American Chinese dramas. As a masterpiece, “Chinglish” sparked strong repercussions after its release on Broadway. The site was set up in a remote town in mainland China. In the play, Chinese and foreign collaborators devoted themselves to cooperation and exchange, but in the mutual learning and imitation process triggered a variety of jokes, especially “Chinese English ” the most thought-provoking use. In view of the salient features of this work's humanism, innovation and integration, this paper focuses on the three major corresponding points of this work with urban spatial theory under the general background of cultural space (1) Social background [geographical orientation, Historical culture]; (2) the power relations; (3) the unique cultural constructions of the author embodied in these three aspects of national identity, clarifying the infiltration behind the phenomenon of “Chinese English” The cultural differences and cultural integration of the parties also provide a reasonable possibility of predicting the future development of both.
