To counter the threat of cruise missiles and low-flying aircraft, West Germany’s MBB and Diehl jointly developed the laser weapon system named HEL (High Energy Laser), which is expected to be commissioned by the turn of the century. HEL will use nitrous oxide / petro-chemical lasers to generate short pulses of 1 megawatt, to penetrate and burn turbines within 10 km, helicopters, remotely piloted aircraft and some missiles. According to MBB, the laser beam has a beam diameter of 10 boxes, and a single exposure of one second is enough to destroy a target of 6 km. In addition, the beam can suppress enemy passive infrared detectors 20 kilometers away. Diehl is responsible for beam focusing / transmission and guidance, tracking and detection systems.
