Irrigation and drainage, especially irrigation, faces a series of new problems that need to be studied. Water supply in many of the world’s irrigation districts is increasingly tense. Irrigation water is re-used and the pressure to turn it to other uses increases, potentially threatening human health and other adverse social impacts. For many areas, research should focus on improving the efficiency of water management, improving water storage and water conservation, and controlling salinity. In 1986, the Commission for Scientific Research and Future Development within the International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage (ICID) proposed a general catalog of priorities for research, ranging from planning policy, design, construction and management to soil and water conservation, salt Stains, and irrigation drainage on the environment and human health effects and other issues. However, the priority research proposed by ICID is very extensive and does not highlight some of the more pressing research topics.
