水稻土的软硬度简单说来就是它的软硬程度。这种物理特征就其形成实质和特征来看,与旱作土和自然土的松紧度一样,都是由于土壤固、液、气三相关系发生变化后表现在对于抵抗外界压力(植物根的伸展和土壤耕作等)时所产生阻力的大小;以及对土壤中水、肥、气、热等肥力因素间协调和保蓄的供应能力。但是另一方面,由于水稻土的水耕特点所造成的“软”或“烂”的特征,无论旱作土或自然土(除沼泽士外)都是不可能具有的。所以土壤的软硬度和松紧度这二个名词在物理学含意上是有差别的,在实际应用中应加以区分,前者专指水稻土,后者则属旱作土和自然
