Merichem Chemicals and Refinery Services and ExxonMobil Research Engineering jointly developed the EXOMER process to reduce the mercaptan sulfur content of hydrotreated FCC gasoline. The refinery can use this process as a downstream refining unit that can be combined with any hydrotreating process that produces mercaptans. In general, when hydrotreating olefins and hydrogen sulphide selectively, heavier C 5+ branching mercaptans are produced.
