1954年10月23日,他出生于台湾屏东潮州,父亲是一所中学的校长,希望他子承父业也能当名教师。但少年时代的他就做起了电影梦。他读高中时,就经常到专播二轮片的全美戏院看电影,尤其是美国八大电影公司的电影,那是他学生时代最爱造访的地方。后来,为了圆他的电影梦,他忤违父愿,于1979年赴美就读伊利诺大学香槟分校戏剧系取得学士学位, On October 23, 1954, he was born in Chaozhou, Pingtung, Taiwan.
