The novel left a deep impression on readers, largely due to the successful characterization. Kline not only tells Marilyn the tragic fate of Margie with the stern brush strokes, but also presents the true and vivid presentation of Margie’s character to readers through exquisite characterization and psychological description. The publication of Maggie foreshadows the transformation of American literary tradition from romanticism to realism. The novel turns the perspective to the unfortunate experience of the ordinary villain. Maggie’s poor origin and prostitute identity also broke the heroic image of the gentle, holy and noble in romantic literature. This is very seminal for the American literature at that time, both in theme and style.
