The day I met An Wen is my 20th birthday. It is the beginning of winter evening in the sky with that kind of sticky snow flying in the sky, if not for birthday, I will not be out of the dormitory in such a weather. Enrolled in nursing school from age 15, I lived in this city for 5 years, 3 years student, 2 years nurse. My home is in a poor and blocked hill village five hundred miles away. I was the first man in the village to enter the city. The folks once said in incomparable envy that the smoke of my family’s grave was fuming. Indifferent smile, hiding heart sadness. If my ancestors did not live in such a place far from modern civilization, I would certainly not have won the fight against death to gain access to junior secondary school, and then read the nursing home for myself through work-study programs. 20 years old, with my usual academic performance, is sitting in a key university classroom, doing a colorful youth dream.
