宋金元时期,曲继词而兴起,发展成一种新的文学体制。由于曲体在演变过程中,处于中国南北方长期分裂的状态,先后以淮水、长江为限,长达一百五六十年的隔离。在这南北方断绝交往的时期,正是由词体向曲体演变的阶段。虽南北曲体同源于词,但因南北区域之不同,政治、风习、文化之有别,南北曲在形成过程中,各自吸收了地方上音乐的、语言的、生活习惯的、文艺的种种因素,因而形成了南北不同的曲体形式——即南曲和北曲。到元至元间,随着元朝的大统一,南北中国得到了政治、经济、文化的大交流。南北曲由以前分派发展的状态,逐步走向合流的道路。这便出现了南北曲互相交流、互相学习、互相运用融合的情况。随之“南北合腔”和“南北合套”的曲体形式出现。特别到明代“合腔”和“合套”的形式运用到南戏、南杂剧的创作中,使戏剧走向了更完善的体系。并直接推动了戏曲和散曲的发展和繁荣,而且把这一艺术形式逐渐推向高峰,这不能不说是南北曲合流中结出的丰硕成果。
