After more than 20 years of unremitting efforts, the western region has undergone tremendous changes in all fields of social and economic development and its overall strength has been continuously enhanced. However, compared with the east, the gap is still obvious. In the 30 years from the founding of new China until 1978, at present prices, the growth rate of gross national product was 7.08: 7.52 in the east and west regions and 0.44 percentage points higher in the western regions than in the eastern regions.
