陈贲自青年时代起就积极追求进步,立志图强报国。新中国成立以后,他以极大的热忱参加了全国石油普查工作,具体组织了陕北一带的地质调查和重力普查以及对四郎庙等构造的钻探。他在总结调查和钻探工作期间,主持制订了我国第一个油田总体开发方案和油区钻探设计方案,为我国石油工业的建立和发展做出了重大贡献。
