张恨水通常被认为是通俗小说大家,他的小说的通俗性主要体现在娱乐消闲功能上,但往往被忽视的一点是:在张恨水小说娱乐消闲的背后,是现代性的逻辑。他的小说写作由于要讨好报纸期刊广大的市民读者,所以不得不深深地植根于中国作为一个半封建半殖民地国家或者后发现代化国家的语境。通过对他的一部不太著名的小说《秘密谷》所做的分析,我们发现它表面上书写的是一个传统的“桃花源”式的寓言故事,但实际上,它却是用现代城市文明的逻辑对“桃花源”故事进行了改写,其背后的运转逻辑是按照以西方为中心去进行想象和建构现代国家的逻辑。
Zhang Henshui is generally regarded as a popular novel, and the popularity of his novels mainly manifests in entertainment and leisure functions. However, it is often overlooked that the logic of modernity lies behind the entertainment of Zhang Henshui’s novels. His fiction, due to his plethora of civic readers in the newspapers and periodicals, has to be deeply rooted in the context of China as a semi-feudal and semi-colonial country or after the discovery of a modernized nation. Through an analysis of one of his less famous novels, The Secret Valley, we find it on the surface of a traditional “peach blossom” allegory, but in reality it uses modern The logic of urban civilization rewrites the story of Peach Blossom Spring and the logic behind it is to follow the logic of taking West as the center to imagine and construct the modern nation.
