Family ethics is the central theme of American playwright Edward Albi’s early one-act play “American Dream.” The playwright traced the marriage relationship between “the supremacy of money” and the intergenerational relationship that broke away from moral boundaries in typical American middle-class families, and presented the intricate family ethical contradictions in the world. With the help of the smallest social unit of the family, Albi aims to reflect the wider social problems and points out the destructive destruction of the ethical relations between family members in the United States by consumerism. It has created a human crisis and led to the relations between people, things and people alienation. When individuals blindly chase money, enjoyment and personal satisfaction, people become more and more indifferent, family ethics are gradually lost.
