1936年“西案事变”后不久,蒋介石返回南京,即令胡宗南部大军开进西北,接替张学良,杨虎城部,封锁陕甘宁边区。1943年6月,周恩来与邓颖超,林彪率百余人乘汽车由重庆返回延安。途中,接到毛泽东电报:胡宗南部队有进攻边区迹象,嘱周恩来在西安与胡交涉。7月9日,周一行至西安。胡宗南指示部下以师礼相待,并规定:对周恩来一律称周先生,对邓颖超一律称周夫人;拒绝邀请林彪。席间,拟将周恩来灌醉。
