本质主义美学观念已为后现代思想所摒弃,然而后现代的宠儿——身份政治和权力历史的美学批评却也在文化研究中遭遇了尴尬。以本尼特和亨特为代表的反美学立场使得美学彻底沦为权力历史的工具,从而有悖于他们思想来源的马克思主义辩证立场。简·朱茀在肯定他们的反美学观点为后现代思想解放做出贡献的基础上,以一种福柯式的方法和激情,检讨了西方性爱文学的合法化历史,探究美学在其中固执与嬗变、规约与反叛的种种情形,析出了色情美学最终导向过度实践、超越道德主义规训的自由基质和历史效果,从而使得权力理论意义上的非法历史具有了朝向自由的基础合法性和进步性。
The essentialist aesthetic concept has been abandoned by the postmodernist thoughts.
