南沙岛、礁、沙、滩到底有多少个?我们慢慢吞吞的祖先和匆匆忙忙的外来强盗都没有搞清楚,只有我国近年的科学勘查,才明明白白地列出了一份清单:共558个。高潮水位时露出水面的岛、洲、礁36个,被植被覆盖的12个,按大小排起队来:太平岛、中业岛、西月岛、南威岛、北子岛、南子岛、敦谦沙洲、南钥岛、鸿庥岛、马欢岛、景宏岛、安波沙洲。太平岛个头最大,0.43平方公里;鸿庥岛算是高个子,6.2米。
