In 1959, the Ministry of Forestry of Trinidad and Tobago embarked on a program of tree breeding, primarily on Caribbean pine and teak, the two most important tree species used to create plantations. There is a big difference between the dry form and viability of the existing pine and teak. Denmark and the United States have had about 30 years of breeding experience. There is growing evidence that the establishment of seed orchards to produce seeds of improved pine and grapefruit varieties will greatly enhance the quality and quantity of trees in the middle and late stages.
