拜厄特的小说《传记家的故事》讲述了一个研究生进入到传记、自传、历史、回忆录、科学文献、历史编纂等不同文类的本质及其复杂关系之中的旅程,也是他进入到自我的旅程。小说对各种文学类型甚至文学本身的各种正统观点进行了戏仿,也对作品中以生态学家和蜜蜂专家芙拉所代表的自然科学给予礼赞。本文指出,拜厄特在作品中意味深长地拆穿了生命与艺术、科学与艺术、历史编纂与文学创作、传记与自传等各种相互对立的学科和观念之间的复杂关系,质疑了利用历史文献进行基于所谓事实生平书写的实践,其展现文类多样性的策略和对文类表现出的嘲讽姿态具有明显的后现代特征。
